Idaho State FlagWhile most people know Idaho for its potatoes, the “Gem State” has earned its nickname thanks to the multitude of precious gemstones that have been found in the state. While the state is mostly mountainous, it is the 39th most populous state and has had a rich history of settlement and industry. Let’s take a look at Idaho auto insurance and how things work for drivers in the Gem State.

Idaho Car Insurance Laws And Requirements

Idaho-Minimum-Insurance-Requirements

As is the case with most other states, the Government of Idaho decided on sticking with the “tort” system when they set up the state’s auto insurance rules. This means that when there’s an accident, one of the drivers will be labeled the “at fault” driver for causing the accident, and that person (and their insurance) will be subject to lawsuits and claims. The system works well, and is in use in most places in the country.

Idaho requires that drivers have a minimum amount of coverage in a couple of different areas before they are legally allowed to drive. It’s important to note that coverage amounts we look at below are minimums and should be exceeded wherever possible and affordable.Idaho Map

Bodily Injury Liability insurance covers any medical treatment, rehabilitation and lost wages claims from other parties due to injuries sustained in an accident where you are the “at fault” party. For instance, if you were to hit another car and the other driver sustained an injury, your Bodily Injury Liability insurance would pay out claims to that person to cover their medical costs. Remember that this type of coverage doesn’t cover anyone in your car – if you are injured in an accident that you cause, you will require a different type of insurance. The State of Idaho requires that drivers carry a minimum coverage amount of $25,000 per party, per accident and a total of $50,000 for all parties in a single accident.

Property Damage Liability is the other mandated insurance in Idaho. This policy will cover the repair or replacement costs of property (like vehicles, fences, bicycles, etc.) that you have damaged in an accident where you are “at fault”. Using the above example, your Property Damage Liability insurance would cover the body work and other repair costs that were necessary to fix the other driver’s car after you hit it. The minimum amount of Property Damage Liability required is $15,000.

Idaho Auto Insurance Rates

Currently, Idaho has the least expensive auto insurance rates in the nation (although this could change at any time!). The average price for a year of Idaho auto insurance as of June 2011 is just $1074, which is more than a third lower than the national average of $1440. Those who live in Idaho’s major cities will inevitably end up paying a slightly higher rate, with drivers in Nampa looking at $1307 per year and drivers in Boise paying around $1250.

Idaho Driving Statistics

The news is good for Idahoan drivers when it comes to vehicle crash rates. The total crash rate has continued to trend downward throughout the decade, with just 22,555 crashes occurring in 2010, a 2% drop from 2009’s total. Even better, fatalities caused by traffic accidents came in at just 209 deaths in 2010, which was a 7.5% drop from the year prior. Thanks to a recent focus by law enforcement on punishing those who refuse to wear their seat belt and on those who drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the fatality rate is expected to decline even further.

Auto theft rates are remarkably low in Idaho, thanks to the friendliness of the population and the care that drivers take in securing their vehicles. Just 1,442 vehicles were stolen in the state in 2009, which is a decrease from 2008’s total of 1,675. This downward trend has continued since 2005, which was the recent peak year for auto thefts. If the theft rate continues to plummet, Idahoan drivers will save even more on their incredibly low auto insurance.
