Shelter Insurance History
Shelter Insurance was launched in 1946 with a mission to provide affordable auto insurance to Missourians. The company was initially organized under the name MFA Insurance Companies. In 1981, however, the company changed its name to Shelter Insurance. The name came from MFA’s famous slogan: “MFA is your Shield of Shelter”.
Over 70 years later, Shelter Insurance offers home, life, car, farm, and business insurance in 15 states. The company is headquartered in Columbia, Missouri. Shelter offers all of the following types of insurance policies: apartment, automobile, boat, business, commercial fire, dwelling, farm fire, farm liability farm owners, general liability, homeowners, inland marine, life, and personal umbrella.
There are three other companies under the Shelter brand, including Shelter Mutual Insurance, Shelter General Insurance, and Shelter Life Insurance. There was once also a Shelter Financial Bank division, although that division was closed in 2012.
Shelter Insurance Rankings
Shelter isn’t one of the top 20 largest car insurance companies in the United States, so the company doesn’t appear on nationwide J.D. Power rankings. However, Shelter does appear on J.D. Power’s regional rankings for the Central region, where it’s currently ranked at the very top.
In the latest J.D. Power rankings, Shelter scored a perfect 5/5 for overall satisfaction and was officially chosen as the best auto insurance provider in the U.S. Central region for 2019. Only two other insurance companies (USAA and Auto-Owners Insurance) scored a 5/5.
Overall Satisfaction: 5 out of 5
Policy Offerings: 4 out of 5
Price: 5 out of 5
Billing Process and Policy Information: 4 out of 5
Interaction with Policyholders: 5 out of 5
Claims Satisfaction: 5 out of 5
Overall, Shelter has some of the best J.D. Power scores you will ever see. It’s rare to find a company with a perfect rating for claims satisfaction. The numbers above are from the 2019 rankings, although Shelter has come in first place for customer satisfaction three of the last four years in the U.S. Central region.
We also analyze car insurance companies based on financial stability. For financial stability, Shelter ranks about average compared to other insurance companies, scoring an “A” or “Excellent” rating from A.M. Best. That rating indicates that the company should have no issue covering its liabilities or paying claims.

Is Shelter a Good Insurance Company? Our Review
Shelter is one of the best insurance companies in America’s Midwest and Central region. It’s been chosen as the best insurance company for customer satisfaction three of the last four years by J.D. Power. In the 2019 rankings, Shelter was at the top of the list, scoring perfect or nearly-perfect for claims satisfaction, pricing, customer service, and other metrics.
Shelter also has fewer complaints than the average insurance company of its size. With an NAIC complaint index of around 0.36, Shelter receives fewer complaints to state regulators than most of its competitors.
Despite the high ratings for customer service, Shelter doesn’t seem to charge significantly higher premiums than its competitors. The company has continued to offer flexible pricing for customers. Customers can also access bundling opportunities and other unique discounts to drop the price of their car insurance even further.
Shelter Auto Insurance Policies and Products
Shelter offers a standard range of car insurance policies and products. Here are some of the policies and products that make Shelter unique:
Standard Liability, Collision, and Comprehensive Policies: Shelter offers all of the car insurance products and plans you would expect, including liability, collision, and comprehensive policies. Customers can adjust their liability limits based on their needs, budget, and desired risk exposure.
Rideshare Coverage: Shelter offers optional rideshare coverage for Uber or Lyft drivers.
Roadside Assistance: Shelter offers roadside assistance to policyholders at an additional cost.
Shelter is frequently ranked as one of the best insurance companies in the Central United States. One of the only drawbacks of Shelter is its coverage area: Shelter Insurance only sells policies in fifteen states across the Central, Midwest, and Southern United States. In all covered states, Shelter is extremely well-rated by policyholders. Shelter was one of the few companies to score a perfect 5/5 on the 2019 J.D. Power rankings as well, indicating that customers are generally satisfied with the claims process and other aspects of Shelter. For all of these reasons and more, Shelter continues to be a preferred choice for drivers across the Central United States.
