What is the history of NJM Insurance Company?

NJM was founded in 1913 by a group of factory owners seeking workers’ compensation coverage. The company was initially known as New Jersey Manufacturers Casualty Insurance Company. It was created when industrialization in America was at its peak. Soon after being established in 1913, the company started to sell personal auto insurance.

In 1921, New Jersey Manufacturers Casualty expanded its offerings even further by selling policies for property loss, commercial auto accidents, private automobiles, and homes. These products were sold under the name New Jersey Manufacturers Association Fire Insurance Company. By 1951, the company had changed its name to New Jersey Manufacturers Indemnity Insurance Company, which would be combined with the original New Jersey Casualty Insurance Company in 1965, forming today’s New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company, or NJM.

Today, NJM is also one of the few insurers in the United States to offer dividends to policyholders – something the company has done uninterrupted every year since 1918.

NJM continues to be headquartered in West Trenton, New Jersey. The company also has additional offices in northern New Jersey (Parsippany) and southern New Jersey (Hammonton).

For most of its history, NJM focused only on New Jersey. In 2018, however, NJM expanded its services to Pennsylvania residents.

What are the company’s rankings?

NJM isn’t one of America’s largest national insurers, so it’s unranked by J.D. Power in terms of its national coverage. However, J.D. Power is ranked by J.D. Power for its mid-Atlantic region. Overall, NJM sits above average compared to its mid-Atlantic region competitors:

  • NJM’s overall interaction score is 887, which is 28 points higher than the mid-Atlantic region average of 859
  • NJM scored a 5 out of 5 score overall from J.D. Power
  • Nearly all (95%) of NJM customers indicate they experienced no problems during the previous 12 months
  • NJM earned a Policy Offerings score of 878, which is 59 points higher than the mid-Atlantic region average of 819 (the national average was also 819)
  • NJM scored significantly higher than the national average in all six Policy Offerings attributes
  • NJM scored substantially higher in terms of price, scoring an 827 ranking compared to the mid-Atlantic region average of 742 and the national average of 735
  • 96% of NJM customers indicated that they had not experienced an error on their billing statement, compared to the mid-Atlantic average of 92%
  • NJM has an overall claims satisfaction score of 909, which is 59 points higher than the mid-Atlantic region average of 850 (and 47 points higher than the national average of 862)

Overall, NJM scored significantly higher than its competitors in most important metrics according to the mid-Atlantic J.D. Power rankings.

A.M. Best, which analyzes the financial strength of companies, has also awarded NJM an “A+” or “Superior” score, which indicates that the company should have no trouble covering its claims or liabilities.

What makes the company unique?

NJM has several features that make it unique from competing insurers:

Only Available in New Jersey and Pennsylvania: NJM has traditionally only served customers in New Jersey. Starting in 2018, however, NJM began accepting customers from Pennsylvania.

Mutual Company: NJM is a mutual company. That means any value or excess profits are given back to policyholders in the form of dividends. NJM claims the average policyholder receives about $150 per year in dividends, equivalent to about a 10% discount on coverage.

Affordable: NJM is known for its affordable policy options. The company routinely scores well in terms of price competitiveness and value among its mid-Atlantic region competitors. NJM’s policies are priced about 20% lower than the New Jersey state average.

Few Complaints: One of the reasons why NJM is ranked so high among car insurers is because the company gets few complaints. In fact, there have been multiple years where the NJ Department of Banking & Insurance receives zero complaints against NJM – which is impressive considering the company insures 850,000 policyholders across the state.

Is NJM a good insurance company?

NJM has very strong reviews compared to other coverage providers in New Jersey. The company scores well in terms of claims satisfaction and pricing. As mentioned above, the NJ Department of Banking & Insurance receives few complaints about NJM, and they even receive no complaints whatsoever in some years. That’s impressive.

In 2012, for example, NJM was ranked as the largest insurer in New Jersey. However, there were zero justified complaints against the insurer that year.

GEICO, the next largest insurer in the state, reported 19 complaints for 809,000 policies, while Allstate, the third-largest insurer, reported 35 complaints for 657,000 policies.

NJM is also well-rated for its repair, rental, and settlement process. Customers generally have a smooth and easy claims experience with NJM.

What are NJM auto insurance policies and products?

NJM offers a standard range of auto policies and products to policyholders in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Some of the features that make the company unique, however, include:

Roadside Assistance Comes Standard: NJM offers roadside assistance on every policy as a standard option.

Ideal for Young, Male Drivers: Young, male drivers are among the highest risk drivers to insure. They always pay more for coverage. However, NJM is one of the most competitive companies for young male drivers, charging significantly less than many of its competitors.

Easy Claims Process: One reason why NJM is ranked so highly is that the company has excellent ratings for its claims process. Few customers have any complaints about making a claim with NJM. Typically, when researching any insurer online, you can find numerous complaints from customers who feel wronged after a denied claim. With NJM, these complaints are surprisingly rare.

What’s our final word?

The only real drawback with NJM is that it’s only available to drivers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Otherwise, the company scores nearly perfect marks for claims satisfaction, pricing, value, and other metrics. Since 1913, NJM has covered New Jersey policyholders while also distributing profits back to policyholders in the form of dividends, with the average policyholder receiving about $150 in dividends per year. For all of these reasons and more, NJM is frequently ranked as the top insurance company in New Jersey (and has recently expanded into Pennsylvania as well).
