North Dakota is one of the twelve states that operate under what is known as the no-fault insurance system. Essentially this means that when an accident occurs, your own auto insurance company will pay out injury and medical treatment claims to you and will deal with the other insurance company on your behalf.
In most no-fault states, drivers give up the right to sue other drivers for causing accidents and injuries, and this is no different in North Dakota. If you are in an accident, regardless of who caused it, your auto insurance company is who you will deal with.
North Dakota Auto Insurance Coverage Types
State law requires drivers to purchase minimum coverage in four different auto insurance policies, which we’ll describe here. Bodily injury liability insurance covers you against the injury treatment costs of other parties when you cause an accident.
Due to North Dakota’s no-fault status, when you cause an accident, this money will be paid by the other insurance company to cover their client’s medical treatment, rehabilitation, and other expenses. The minimum amount of BIL coverage required in North Dakota is $25,000 per party per accident and $50,000 for all parties in a single accident.
Property damage liability auto insurance coverage is much like bodily injury liability, except it’s intended to cover the repair and replacement costs for the other parties’ property (including automobiles) that are damaged in an accident that you caused. A minimum of $25,000 in property damage liability is required to be considered insured in North Dakota.
Personal injury protection auto insurance coverage covers the medical treatment and injury-related costs for the policyholder and their passengers when they are in an accident – regardless of fault. If another party caused the accident, your PIP will kick in to cover any costs that exceed the ‘at fault’ party’s bodily injury liability insurance. The minimum amount of PIP coverage one can have is $30,000.
Finally, uninsured motorist coverage is much like PIP or BIL, except it protects the policyholder and their passengers from costs associated with being in an accident with another party who has no insurance. The minimum amount of UM insurance one can have is the same as BIL – $25,000 per party per accident and $50,000 for all parties in a single accident. Enter your ZIP code now to begin.
North Dakota Driving Statistics and Information
Although the state has gone through a number of initiatives to improve traffic safety, North Dakota was one of the few states that saw an increase to the number of vehicle crashes in the most recent year for which figures are available. In 2009, the state saw a total of 17,673 crashes with 140 fatalities resulting from these accidents.
Both of these numbers increased over 2008, which saw 16,387 crashes and 104 total fatalities. To combat these numbers from rising higher, the North Dakota Department of Transportation created a new safety division in December 2009. The goal of this division will be to ensure that traffic safety remains a top priority and that citizens are compliant with the laws of the road.
Additionally, ensuring that drivers have adequate property damage liability auto insurance coverage can help mitigate the financial impact of accidents and promote responsible driving practices.
Thanks to its friendly population and location somewhat far from the coasts, auto theft numbers in North Dakota are also quite low. 2009 saw just 852 vehicles reported stolen across the entire state, which works out to a theft rate of 131.7 vehicles per 100,000 residents.
Schimri Yoyo
Licensed Agent & Financial Advisor
This rate was low enough to rank the state 44th overall in the nation for auto thefts and has been trending downward since the peak of 1,073 vehicles stolen in 2005. 2008 saw 902 total auto thefts, so the 2009 numbers represent a decline of around 6% year over year.
If the rates continue downward, residents of North Dakota should see their auto insurance premiums come down in cost over time as well.
