Nevada Auto Insurance Requirements
When Nevada lawmakers created the state’s auto insurance laws, they went with the tort system, currently in use by 38 states including Nevada.
In short, when an accident occurs, one of the drivers is determined to be the at-fault party – the one who caused the accident – and this person and their auto insurance are subject to claims and lawsuits.

Liberty Mutual | $47 | $111 |

The State of Nevada requires that drivers purchase a minimum amount of coverage for two different types of auto insurance coverage: bodily injury liability and property damage liability.
Bodily injury liability insurance covers the medical treatment and injury-related costs of the other party and their passengers when you are the at-fault party in an accident.
For instance, if Driver A causes a collision with Driver B and their medical claims total $25,000, Driver A and their insurance company will be required to pay this amount. State law requires that drivers have a minimum coverage of $25,000 per party, per accident and $30,000 for all parties in a single accident.
It’s worth noting that with today’s high cost of medical treatment, this amount is considered somewhat low and is worth increasing if it’s in your budget.
Property damage liability insurance works much like the above-mentioned BIL insurance, except the purpose of PD.L is to cover the cost of damage to other parties’ property, including their car, when you are the ‘at fault’ party in an accident.
Using the above example, if the accident that Driver A caused did a total of $4,000 in body damage to Driver B’s car, Driver A’s Property damage liability insurance would pick up this cost. The minimum amount of PDL coverage that a driver in Nevada can have is $20,000.
Nevada Auto Insurance Rates
Unfortunately for drivers in Nevada, while the state is below average in population it is slightly higher than average for auto insurance rates, which makes it a little harder to find affordable auto insurance.
As of July 2011, the average car insurance premium in the state was $129 per month, about $100 higher than the national average of $1,440.
Relevant Nevada Driving Statistics
While Nevada ranks in the top ten states in the nation for auto crashes, the state has done a remarkable job of reducing accidents and improving driver safety in recent years.
The total crash number is quite high, given that Nevada is the 35th most populated state, but when compared to 2007’s total of 62,254 crashes and 341 fatalities, it’s clear that the trend is steeply downward.
With a continued focus by law enforcement – and drivers – on improving traffic safety, the crash rates will continue downward, as will the state’s above-average auto insurance prices.e.
While the state has managed to reduce the number of auto thefts by 50% between 2006 and 2009, Nevada is still ranked #2 in the nation for vehicle theft. So if you live in Nevada, you may want to invest in a car with anti-theft recovery systems.
In 2009, just 12,379 vehicles were reported stolen, down from 15,918 in 2008 and down from an astronomical 26,961 in 2006. The 2009 numbers give Nevada a rate of 468.4 auto thefts per 100,000 residents, good enough to hold down the 2nd highest rate in the nation for a 5th straight year.
As the huge decline in auto theft numbers over the past three years shows, Nevada law enforcement is making it a priority to prevent cars from being stolen.
