If on a fixed income after retirement, its even more important that you find a cheap rate on auto insurance. Keep reading below to discover tips on how senior citizens can get discounts on their auto insurance premiums.

Top 5 Tips for Getting Discounted Auto Insurance for Senior Citizens

Just because you’re a senior citizen doesn’t mean you have to pay higher insurance prices! There are plenty of great discounts available to senior citizens across the United States.

1. Shop Around (Especially If You Haven’t Switched Insurers for Decades)

Above all, the most important tip is to shop around. Some insurance companies specialize in insuring younger drivers, which means older drivers pay relatively high rates. Other insurance companies specialize in insuring older, more experienced drivers. It’s crucial that you shop around for car insurance as a senior citizen – especially if you’ve been with the same insurance company for years or even decades. You might be surprised at the options available to you.

2. Take a Driving Class

Teenage drivers can get a steep discount by taking a driving class. Senior citizens often have the same option available. Most major car insurance companies in the United States give discounts to senior citizens who take a driving class. Organizations like AAA and the AARP actually offer driving classes especially for senior citizens. These classes aren’t designed to teach you how to drive: they’re designed to help senior citizens brush up on their driving skills. They also tackle age-related issues, including how medications can affect driving and how your driving habits can change as your body physically ages. Classes can be as cheap as $20 and you can get a steep discount for years. Look for mature driving training courses and other defensive driving programs in your area.

3. Get a Cheaper Car

You may have driven a luxury SUV for the past ten years. But times have changed. As insurance prices go up, you might be better off with a cheaper, less valuable vehicle. The cheapest cars to insure are vehicles that don’t cost a lot to repair and replace. Downgrade to a cheaper vehicle and you’ll notice a steep decline in insurance prices.

4. Ask About Low Mileage Discounts

Senior citizens tend to drive less than younger drivers. You may be retired or working part-time as you get older. If you’re driving less, then ask your insurance company about low mileage discounts. Steep discounts may be available to drivers who drive fewer than, say, 7,000 miles per year. Insurance companies are also more likely to provide a discount if you drive your vehicle outside of rush hour or only during the day. Sometimes, your insurance company will install a tracking device in your vehicle for a month to monitor your driving habits for a month or longer. If you maintain low mileage during this period, you may be eligible for low mileage discounts and other usage-based insurance discounts.

5. Consider Joining a Senior’s Organization

Senior’s organizations like the AARP provide discounts on car insurance. Up above, we also mentioned that the AARP runs mature driving training courses in certain states. Alternatively, retired members of the US military may be eligible for big auto insurance savings at any age by getting car insurance through USAA.
