What Membership Discounts Are Available for Auto Insurance?

You may have heard about AAA or AARP members getting discounts on auto insurance. However, these are just two of many groups eligible for car insurance discounts.

What membership discounts are available for auto insurance? Which organizations receive discounted rates on car insurance? Today, we’re highlighting some of the top membership discounts for auto insurance.

what membership discounts are available for auto insurance?

AAA

AAA members are eligible to receive discounted car insurance. In fact, AAA only sells car insurance to AAA members. You must pay your annual AAA membership fee to qualify for car insurance. If you fail to renew your membership, then your car insurance will be canceled.

Generally, AAA auto insurance is competitive with other major American insurance providers. However, they may be priced slightly higher than some of America’s cheapest insurers.

One of the biggest benefits of AAA auto insurance is that you get AAA membership benefits as well, including roadside assistance and travel discounts. For many drivers, this makes AAA insurance worth it – even if it’s not necessarily the cheapest option.

AARP

AARP, unlike AAA, doesn’t sell its own auto insurance policies. However, the organization has partnered with The Hartford to sell discounted auto insurance to drivers over 50.

If you are over 50 and a member of the AARP, then you qualify for the “AARP Auto Insurance Program from the Hartford”. The Hartford sells auto insurance to anyone – including non-AARP members. However, AARP members enjoy some of the most competitive car insurance rates through The Hartford.

As an AARP member, you can also access other benefits. AARP members get a lifetime renewability benefit with The Hartford in most states, for example, which means you are guaranteed car insurance for life if you meet a few simple requirements.

Generally, The Hartford’s car insurance premiums are very competitive for AARP members. If you are already a member of the AARP, or if you are considering becoming a member, then The Hartford’s auto insurance may be the right choice for you.

Alumni Associations

Certain alumni associations offer steep discounts on car insurance. GEICO, for example, has partnered with many alumni associations across the country. You can view their list of partners here.

Liberty Mutual has also partnered with various alumni associations to offer 10% discounts on car insurance.

Check with your alumni association to determine if you qualify for discounted car insurance.

Costco

Costco members can save money on car insurance. Costco has partnered with Ameriprise to offer members discounted rates on car insurance.

There’s a catch with Costco car insurance: not all members will save money. However, members who qualify can save hundreds of dollars. The Costco / Ameriprise insurance website claims the average member saves $593 the first year they make the switch.

On April 2, 2019, Ameriprise announced they were selling their auto and home insurance business to American Family Insurance. Moving forward, Costco members will still qualify for insurance, and existing policyholders will not need to switch. However, the insurance will technically be offered through American Family Insurance – not Ameriprise.

Exclusive benefits for Costco members include roadside assistance and lifetime renewability. Plus, you can bundle your policy with a home insurance plan to save even more money.

BJ’s Wholesale Club

If you are a member of BJ’s Wholesale Club, then you may qualify for discounted GEICO car insurance. BJ’s Wholesale Club partners with GEICO to offer exclusive discounts.

As with other GEICO partnerships, the specific discount will vary between members. BJ’s Wholesale Club members, however, can request a quote online today to see how their rates compare.

Student Discounts

We talked about alumni discounts up above. You may not need to wait until graduation to qualify for a discount, however. Many car insurance companies offer student discounts or good grade discounts.

If you maintain an average of B or higher, then you may qualify for savings of 10% to 15% with your car insurance company. Check with your insurer to see if you qualify. You will be required to provide a transcript proving your good grades, but it can save you hundreds – even thousands – of dollars during your high school and college years.

USAA and Military Discounts

If you or an immediate family member is a member of the military or a veteran, then you should qualify for USAA membership. Once you’re a USAA member, you’re a member for life.

USAA provides some of the best insurance coverage in the country. They also offer banking services and more – all at more competitive prices than most other providers.

Emergency Deployment Discounts

If you are a member of the military who is part of an emergency deployment to an imminent danger zone, then you may qualify for a special emergency deployment discount. GEICO, for example, offers this discount.

Other insurance companies offer similar discounts for military personnel deployed overseas.

Eagle Discounts for Federal Employees

GEICO offers special discounts for federal employees called ‘eagle discounts’. Active and retired federal employees may qualify for these discounts.

Other insurance companies offer similar discounts for federal employees.

Other Organizations and Discounts

Whatever organization you belong to, you may qualify for specific auto insurance discounts. GEICO and other major American insurance companies have partnered with hundreds of organizations across the country, including everything from business groups to professional associations to military organizations.

We recommend checking with your specific organizations to determine if you qualify for any car insurance savings, including:

  • Business groups or professional groups
  • Military organizations
  • Recreational organizations
  • Fraternities and sororities
  • Honor societies

Check with these organizations to see if you qualify for significant car insurance savings.
