Step 3: Find a new car insurance policy

Step 4: Cancel your The Hartford policy

Below, we’ll outline three easy ways to cancel your policy.

How do I cancel over the phone?

There are three different phone numbers available that you can call to cancel your policy.

  • For regular policyholders: (877) 896-9320
  • For AARP members: (800) 423-6789
  • For hearing-impaired individuals: (800) 877-8973

When canceling over the phone, you will need your name, policy number, and the date you would like the cancellation to be effective. This can be in the future or immediately.

How can I cancel online?

To begin the cancellation process online, you must access your account through The Hartford’s website (www.thehartford.com) by using your The Hartford auto insurance login.

You can then navigate to the PL Policy Change Center. You can search for the policy you would like to enter either by entering the policy number or the insured’s name, city, state, and ZIP code.

You will need to enter the date you’d like the policy to be canceled, the reason for cancellation, and confirm that you have signed a cancellation request form.

Once you have confirmed the cancellation, you will no longer be able to view or make changes to the policy online. However, the cancellation may take up to five business days to complete.

How do I cancel by mail?

To cancel by mail, you should write an auto insurance cancellation letter that includes your name and contact information, policy number, the date you’d like your policy to be canceled, and your signature and date.

Regular policyholders can mail their letter to The Hartford Personal Lines, The Hartford, PO Box 14219, Lexington, KY 40512.

However, The Hartford may also charge a prorated 10 percent cancellation or early termination fee, meaning you would pay 10 percent of what you would have paid for the rest of your policy.

You could contact The Hartford auto insurance customer service at (877) 896-9320 to ask if you will have to pay that fee.
