Arkansas State FlagArkansas – the “Natural State” – was first founded by settlers who organized a large chunk of sparsely inhabited land into the Arkansas Territory in 1819. The state was formally admitted to the union just 17 years later, and proved to be an important partner to its new country, sending troops to assist Texas with its war of independence from Mexico. Let’s take a look at Arkansas’s auto insurance and how things work in the state.

Drivers in Arkansas participate in what is known as the “tort” system of auto insurance. When an accident or crash occurs, a driver will be determined to be “at fault” for causing it, and this driver and their insurance will be subject to financial claims and lawsuits. If you’re coming to Arkansas from another state, know that this is probably the same system that you used but as with all state-to-state transitions, there may be minor tweaks. Ask your auto insurance agent for further details.

To ensure that drivers have at least a minimum amount of auto insurance when driving the roads, the Government of Arkansas has instituted mandatory minimums in a couple of different areas that all drivers must purchase to legally drive. Property Damage Liability insurance covers any automobile or property damage that you cause when you get into an accident. For instance, if you should hit another car in a crash that you are “at fault” for, your Property Damage Liability coverage will pick up some (or all) of the costs. The minimum amount of Property Damage Liability insurance by law is $25,000.

Bodily Injury Liability is another type of mandatory coverage in Arkansas. This insurance will cover the costs associated with injuries you cause to other parties in an accident. To use the above example – if the driver in the car you hit was to sustain a broken arm, your Bodily Injury Liability insurance would cover their medical treatment costs, lost wages and other financial claims associated with the accident. The minimum amount of Bodily Injury Liability coverage is $25,000 per victim, per accident and $50,000 for all victims in a single accident. Note that with today’s high medical treatment and hospital costs, these amounts can be quite low, so if you have room in your budget, try to pick up enhanced coverage.

Theft and Accident Stats In Arkansas

Aside from a brief spike in the middle of the decade, auto theft rates in Arkansas remained relatively flat until 2008. Thanks to stepped-up law enforcement in urban areas and more care being taken by Arkansas residents to protect their automobiles, auto theft is currently experience a steep decline. 2009 saw just 6,100 total reported vehicle thefts, down from 6,500 in 2008 and 7,010 the year prior. If current trends continue, the reduction in auto thefts will have a positive impact on Arkansas auto insurance rates for everyone in the state.

The good news continues for Arkansas drivers when crash statistics are considered as well. 2009 saw a total of 62,808 vehicle crashes across the state, which was down from 63,137 the year prior. Since the start of the decade, vehicle crashes are down more than 12%, thanks to Arkansas drivers using better caution and judgment on the road, and more enforcement of traffic laws by police. Since peaking in 2004, traffic fatalities have also continued declining, with 2009 seeing just 592 fatalities caused by car accidents. Again, if these trends continue it will help bring down Arkansas’s auto insurance rates.
